Emergency response
The shelter-in-place decision: all things considered (pdf 80kb)
This journal article examines the need for community education in effective emergency management and response. It highlights that the efficiency of emergency management to coordinate a response is based upon emergency response teams ability in pre-incident planning and preparedness education, to quickly detect an incident. It is also important to determine the incident's impact and spread rate and to inform the public whether the best protective action is to evacuate or to shelter-in-place.
The article concludes in saying that in order to optimize emergency management and public health outcomes, factors that help lead to a decision to evacuate or shelter-in-place include:
- Building type
- Availability of a designated shelter area and supplies
- Prior disaster preparedness
