Mobile health units in emergency operations: a methodological approach (pdf 190kb)
This paper provides guidance to practitioners providing primary health services in humanitarian situations on deciding whether to include mobile health units (MHUs) in their programs. It gives an overview of the place of MHUs in a health care system, and provides the theoretical background to the decision-making process around how and when to set them up. It also describes the strengths and weaknesses of MHUs, drawing on practical examples both from the literature and field experiences.
The paper concludes that while MHUs are useful where traditional permanent health structures are unavailable, other options should be considered before establishing and using them as the main alternate form of health service provision.
