The Australian Development Gateway (ADG) strives to support members of the development community in their efforts to reduce poverty and enhance sustainable development in the Asia Pacific region. The site has been created with participation from members of government, private, academia and non-government organisations. User feedback mechanisms have been incorporated to guide future directions of the site. The site is optimised for low bandwidth access to enable the widest participation throughout the Asia Pacific region.

The stigmatisation of leprosy in India: impact on future approaches to elimination & control (pdf 110kb)

This article presents a review of leprosy in India and highlights future challenges in control the disease.

It documents a range of historical and contemporary reasons contributing to the marginalisation of people suffering from leprosy, and also describes the government's efforts to detect, treat and eliminate leprosy.

The article concludes that further reducing leprosy in India requires a holistic approach that includes ongoing education, tackling stigma, and the inclusion of traditional practitioners in disease control programs.
