Australian Development Gateway

The Australian Development Gateway (ADG) strives to support members of the development community in their efforts to reduce poverty and enhance sustainable development in the Asia Pacific region. The site has been created with participation from members of government, private, academia and non-government organisations. User feedback mechanisms have been incorporated to guide future directions of the site. The site is optimised for low bandwidth access to enable the widest participation throughout the Asia Pacific region.

Agribusiness in South Asia (pdf 2.2mb)

This paper reviews the nature, profile and functioning of South Asia's agribusiness sector which has been undergoing rapid changes in the wake of globalisation.

The key focus of the paper is investigating the impact of agribusiness corporations, supermarket chains and other large agencies on primary producers in South Asia, and rural poverty reduction more generally.

The paper covers several topics, including:

- Contract farming
- Organic produce chains

It concludes with major findings of the study and policy recommendations for how the poverty reduction impact of current agribusiness practices in South Asia can be improved.
