International water transfer and sharing : case of the Ganges River (pdf 300kb)
This article explores market-based water transfer and its significance in mitigating water scarcity and resolving transboundary water conflict in the Ganges River Basin.The paper is divided into a number of sections covering the following issues:
A brief history of the Ganges River dispute between India and Bangladesh, the existing situation and the potential role of water transfers from Nepal in reducing the water scarcity and conflicts.
A theoretical model for water allocation between the two countries, India and Bangladesh, with the possibility of water transfer from a third country, Nepal.
Based on modelling, the likely effects of water transfer on India's welfare, and incentives for both India and Bangladesh to agree to a water transfer provision.
