Regulating transformational branchless banking: mobile phones & other technology to increase access to finance (pdf 440kb)
This paper summarises current trends in the use of ICTs to conduct banking activities and access financial services, and provides policy recommendations to governments and regulatory bodies.It presents research from 7 countries across the world including the Philippines, South Africa and Kenya, on recent trends in so-called 'branchless banking" and the policy implications of these trends.
The paper also provides policy recommendations that aim to help government and regulatory bodies create appropriate regulatory policies that gives space for innovation and allows branchless banking to scale up safely.
This paper was supported by a number of organisations, including AusAID.
