Australian Development Gateway

The Australian Development Gateway (ADG) strives to support members of the development community in their efforts to reduce poverty and enhance sustainable development in the Asia Pacific region. The site has been created with participation from members of government, private, academia and non-government organisations. User feedback mechanisms have been incorporated to guide future directions of the site. The site is optimised for low bandwidth access to enable the widest participation throughout the Asia Pacific region.

Regulating transformational branchless banking: mobile phones & other technology to increase access to finance (pdf 440kb)

This paper summarises current trends in the use of ICTs to conduct banking activities and access financial services, and provides policy recommendations to governments and regulatory bodies.

It presents research from 7 countries across the world including the Philippines, South Africa and Kenya, on recent trends in so-called 'branchless banking" and the policy implications of these trends.

The paper also provides policy recommendations that aim to help government and regulatory bodies create appropriate regulatory policies that gives space for innovation and allows branchless banking to scale up safely.
