Telephone and wireless technology
Telephones and livelihoods (pdf 1mb)
This paper describes the findings of a new study by leading telecommunications researchers, based on case studies in India, Mozambique and Tanzania, which looks at how telephones improve life for rural people in developing countries. It covers the tremendous growth in telephone ownership and use in developing countries, from a single telephone for every thousand in Africa, to today where the mobile phone is a key icon of the use of new information communication technologies (ICTs) in the developing world. But what difference do telephones make to people's lives? And are they important for development?
