Australian Development Gateway

The Australian Development Gateway (ADG) strives to support members of the development community in their efforts to reduce poverty and enhance sustainable development in the Asia Pacific region. The site has been created with participation from members of government, private, academia and non-government organisations. User feedback mechanisms have been incorporated to guide future directions of the site. The site is optimised for low bandwidth access to enable the widest participation throughout the Asia Pacific region.

Environmental impacts of trade liberalisation in the bio-diesel sector of the Lao People's Democratic Republic (PDR) (pdf 760kb)

This paper examines the impacts of increased trade liberalisation on bio-diesel sector in Laos.  In particular, it looks at the environmental impacts, both positive and negative, of trade liberalisation in the sector.

Issues covered in the paper include:
- An overview of the bio-diesel sector
- Trade-related environmental impacts and national experiences in improving environmental sustainability in the sector
- Lessons and policy recommendations for the bio-fuel fuel sector

The paper forms part of a broader series of studies looking at the complex links between trade and environment in developing countries.
