Migration, development & natural disasters: insights from the Indian Ocean tsunami (pdf 980kb)

This paper explores how natural disasters affect migration and development.  It reviews the impact of the Indian Ocean Tsunami on migration in Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Thailand, and draws out the links between natural disasters and migration.

A range of issues are explored, including the types of migration caused by the tsunami, the responses of governments and diaspora and people trafficking.

The paper identifies a number of lessons and recommendations to assist people and organisations involved disaster management and similar humanitarian activities.
