Finding the local community in community media: some stories from Nepal (pdf 160kb)
This paper examines the relationship between local media and communities in developing countries.Drawing on a selection of case studies of community media initiatives in Nepal, the paper looks at a range of issues including:
- The variety of roles that local media plays within their communities
- The challenges that media encounters in its quest to support and respond to the demands and needs of the local community
- Ways in which local media provides opportunities for social participation
- How local organisations deal with practical issues as technical maintenance, financing and other sustainability issues
The paper concludes with some lessons on how community media initiatives can better provide opportunities for the disadvantaged, poor and marginalised to be more engaged within their own communities.
