Gender-based violence

Last updated on 14 April 2008

Gender-based violence (GBV) is violence experienced in different ways by males and females based on the socially constructed differences between 'masculinity' and 'femininity'. GBV undermines progress across all development activities.

Forms of violence include domestic violence, child abuse, gun violence, anti-gay violence, human trafficking, sexual violence, genital mutilation and sex-selected massacres. The majority of victims in most cases are women and girls. Men and boys can also be affected by forms of GBV.

Addressing GBV to try to reduce incidences can be very isolating and dangerous for victims and practitioners. Below are links to resources that seek to increase understanding, and provide support and guidance.
