The Australian Development Gateway (ADG) strives to support members of the development community in their efforts to reduce poverty and enhance sustainable development in the Asia Pacific region. The site has been created with participation from members of government, private, academia and non-government organisations. User feedback mechanisms have been incorporated to guide future directions of the site. The site is optimised for low bandwidth access to enable the widest participation throughout the Asia Pacific region.

Disarmament, demobilization and reintegration, and gender-based violence in Sierra Leone (pdf 342kb)

This report examines the achievements and lessons related to the disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration (DDR) of youth in Sierra Leone, with an emphasis on problems faced by girls and women seeking to reintegrate into society.

Issues covered in the report include:

- An overview of DDR efforts in Sierra Leone
- Gaps in the DDR efforts
- Differences in DDR efforts with children, particularly girls
- Moving beyond DDR as a security and psychosocial intervention

The report also summarises key lessons and recommendations from the Sierra Leone experience on how best to assist the social reintegration of girls and women following a period of conflict.
