Australian Development Gateway

The Australian Development Gateway (ADG) strives to support members of the development community in their efforts to reduce poverty and enhance sustainable development in the Asia Pacific region. The site has been created with participation from members of government, private, academia and non-government organisations. User feedback mechanisms have been incorporated to guide future directions of the site. The site is optimised for low bandwidth access to enable the widest participation throughout the Asia Pacific region.

This guide describes best practice in the clinical management of people who have been raped in emergency situations.

It provides practical guidance on how to develop protocols covering a range of areas including:

- Making preparations to offer medical care to rape survivors
- Preparing the survivor for the examination
- Taking the history
- Collecting forensic evidence
- Performing the physical and genital examination
- Prescribing treatment
- Counseling the survivor
- Follow-up care of the survivor

While this guide focuses on clinical issues, it also provides references to additional information dealing with other aspects of assisting rape survivors.
