Gender and small arms violence in Papua New Guinea (pdf 470kb)
This paper examines the different experiences of men and women in the context of the 'gun culture' that has developed in parts of Papua New Guinea (PNG) in recent years. It discusses the links between PNG's gun culture, raskolism, tribal fighting, and election-related violence, and provides an overview of the gender dimensions of this violence.
It also looks at the various responses of government agencies and community-based organisations to violence and conflict.
The paper concludes with a summary of key lessons and recommendations for policy makers.
