Australian Development Gateway

The Australian Development Gateway (ADG) strives to support members of the development community in their efforts to reduce poverty and enhance sustainable development in the Asia Pacific region. The site has been created with participation from members of government, private, academia and non-government organisations. User feedback mechanisms have been incorporated to guide future directions of the site. The site is optimised for low bandwidth access to enable the widest participation throughout the Asia Pacific region.

Women and governance from the grassroots in Melanesia (pdf 873kb)

This publication includes a number of papers on the links between gender and governance in Melanesia.

Topics covered in the papers include:

- The role of Melanesian women in democracy
- The Catholic women's group, Auki Malaita - a catalyst for change
- A literacy program for women in Vanuatu
- Christianity and women in Bougainville

The papers aim to highlight local practices and strategies used to enhance the skills, status and effectiveness of rural Melanesian women in governance areas.
