ICT for Development
The new economy and developing countries: assessing the role of ICT diffusion (pdf 140kb)
This paper looks at the relationship between ICT diffusion and economic productivity and growth in developing countries. It examines data on a range of indicators on ICT diffusion, and compares these with indicators on per capita income, trade and financial indicators, education, and freedom.
The paper then presents lessons from the results of this study, including:
- Income and government trade policies influence ICT diffusion
- Personal computers and internet hosts seem to have a positive influence on income
- ICT diffusion does not seem to enhance education, contrary to expectations.
