What are the effects of a tsunami on rice production?
The December 26, 2004 Tsunami tragically affected many rice producing areas in Asia.A Tsunami or invasion of salt water can affect rice production in terms of:
- Direct crop losses, food shortages and storage losses of donated food
- Losses of seed stocks
- Salinisation of soils
- Shortages of labour and equipment
- Limited information on needed rice and other production practices.
The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) addresses the above issues by providing information on how to store grain and seed more safely, how to reclaim salt affected soils, which rice varieties are salt tolerant, what to do if labour is short, contact addresses for local agricultural information, and more.
