Guidelines for gender sensitive disaster management
These guidelines are a set of practical steps to assist governments, the non state sector and civil society to respond to women's concerns and needs in post disaster situations. The guidelines draw from reports of countries that were affected by the December 2004 tsunami (Thailand, Aceh, India, Sri Lanka) and the earthquake in northern Pakistan in October 2005.
They are meant to be practical, easy to follow steps that need to be taken in responding to women's concerns in post disaster situations. They have been categorised into immediate, mid term and long term responses.
In disaster relief efforts, a rights based approach must be adopted so that women's rights are promoted and safeguarded. Women's socio economic and cultural rights, as well as their civil and political rights must be ensured at all times.
