Enhancing the agricultural sector in Pacific island economies (pdf 265kb)

This paper examines how selected Pacific island countries have measured up with respect to raising the efficiency of agricultural production. Results reveal that efficiency levels in the 4 countries studied - Samoa, Fiji, Papua New Guinea and Tonga - have not changed over the past four decades.

The article provides an overview of Pacific islands agriculture, describes the statistical technique used for computing indices of efficiency for the agriculture sector, and presents the results for the four countries. It also makes some suggestions for achieving improvements in agricultural sector performance.
