This project examines the correlation between positive self-identity and better school outcomes for Indigenous students.Students in the study who showed positive self-identity as a student, associated with school success, perceived value in schooling. Factors associated with developing positive self-identity as a student include the school attitude; teacher support and promotion of education as a valuable commodity; a relevant school curriculum; and support and encouragement from family, peers and community.
Strategies include focusing on the qualities of teachers; school organisation and curriculum; continued bilingual language programs; involvement of Indigenous people in schools; discipline practices within schools; alternative education programs; career education; family and community support; and a range of Indigenous role models.
