Investing in Indonesia's health: challenges and opportunities for public spending (pdf 1.3mb)

This review looks at increased public spending on health, through programs such as Askeskin, which signals Government commitment to improving health outcomes in remote areas as well as for the poor.

In the past few years, Indonesia has introduced some major changes into its health system: decentralization has empowered districts and provinces to manage and finance midwives, nurses and doctors; and the introduction of a health insurance system for the poor (Askeskin) has created the opportunity to protect vulnerable Indonesians against slipping into poverty when they fall ill.

This Health Public Expenditure Review (Health PER) is a very timely and welcome analysis that supports Indonesia in the development and implementation of its health sector strategy and is an important input for the Government's
next Medium-Term National Development Plan (2009-14).

This report is also available in Bahasa Indonesia. Also included is a multi media link to a slideshow highlighting investment in Indonesia's health.
