Unchartered waters influences on the Australian urban water sector (pdf 365kb)

This discussion paper provides the basis for scenario planning among urban water managers and decision-makers on the nature of the world in 2024 and how this will affect water planning.

It identifies seven 'key influencers' that will help drive future events which include:

- Globalisation and liberalisation
- People and institutions
- Population
- Climate and environmental change
- Energy and greenhouse gas
- Science and technology
- Water use and management

The paper also presents a series of 'what if..' pictures of possible futures with implications for the water sector.  While the focus is on Australia, the discussion and approach is widely applicable.
