Expanding citizen participation
Building bridges from community consultation to community engagement (pdf 650kb)
This poster presentation summarises the change in thinking about how to engage with the community by presenting the traditional approach of community consultation to a more inclusive, deliberative and empowering collaboration with the beneficiary community.Traditionally governments and project staff asked the opinions of the community through a survey, discussion or a problem tree analysis.
The author describes the manner and benefits of what she refers to a community engagement which encourages collaboration and ongoing partnership between government/program and community/beneficiary through out the project live cycle. The author explains where the former traditional approach only attracted the 'activists' the latter engages with the whole community and provides opportunity for continuous learning by all parties.
