Expanding citizen participation
Changing the way the government works (pdf 125kb)
This paper provides information on how governments and communities can work together to promote more collaborative governance, giving insights and models for communities and governments who want to engage in a new way of governing at the local level. It contains many key concepts that relate to what governments need to do to prepare themselves to work collaboratively with their constituency in both policy formulation and program implementation.
The paper also emphasises that at the centre of all models and approaches, is a commitment by governments to strengthen communities which means increasing social cohesion or connectedness, distributed leadership through partnerships and joint ventures, inclusive partnerships and new institutionalised forms of governments and community to work together.
